A dark fairytale styled shoot… What more can I say, the title of the shoot captured my attention and when I saw the lovilee images and décor, I was convinced! The shoot was a collaboration between Oh Happy Day, a newly launched wedding styling and design company, and The Shank Tank, videographers and photographers.
‘We met over coffee and got chatting about possibly doing a styled shoot around her launch… We both wanted to do a styled shoot that was a little different, something a little dark, a bit of fairytale and fantasy mixed with opulent elegance… and so our A Dark Fairytale Styled Shoot was born. Imagine Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White meeting in the forest… Our goal was to add some unique prettiness to our supplier’s portfolios and hopefully give any passing brides some inspiration in their planning. We had so much fun working on this shoot, as wedding suppliers its great to exercise some creative freedom with styled shoots.’ – The Shank Tank
Jo, from Oh Happy Day, was responsible the gorgeous styling and coordination of the A Dark Fairytale styled shoot. The backbone behind this shoot and the reason we all rocked up on the right day! From spray painting bottles and pine cones, to coordinating models and suppliers, her skills are flawless!
Oh Happy Day is a breath of fresh air in the Durban wedding industry. After creating her own sensational Winter wonderland wedding last year Jo realised that there was a gap in the industry, between wedding planning/coordination, and the creative side of styling a wedding. ‘Oh Happy Day’ bridges that gap because the offering is two-fold: it’s a wedding styling and design business, offering a bespoke planning service.
The stationary for the shoot was printed on brown Kraft paper using black and gold detailing. The fairytale-forest-like theme combined with the use of rustic looking kraft paper is a great idea for a whimsical and affordable wedding stationary theme. Ruby + Swallow is a stationery boutique, specialising in wedding and events stationery. Based in Durban, the business began out of a love for design, stationery and all things pretty.

Hired & Co supplied the gorgeous décor pieces that you see in the shoot. Tamryn & Melissa from Hired & Co have been friends for years. Together they share a passion for planning gatherings, from small intimate and spontaneous tea parties to celebrations for momentous occasions with friends and family. We also share a love for anything pretty, vintage, eclectic, creative or styled.

Lemon Canary supplied a gorgeous three tiered Cream cake with Black & Gold Ribbon detail. They also provided the most gorgeous (and unbelievably delicious) Red Velvet cupcakes with Cream Cheese icing, Cherries and Gold glitter details.
“Lemon Canary was born 6 years ago when I had just finished studying photography at Stellenbosch, specializing in food styling and photography. I’ve always had a deep passion for food, but did not want to be a chef. Making cakes combines both food and design and I’m always challenging myself as I am self -taught.
What I love most about my job is working with top quality ingredients and creating edible masterpieces! At the moment I am loving working with buttercream techniques and textures as well as metallics and organic touches using hand picked blooms, berries, sticks and leaves. I am passionate about gardening and try to incorporate my homegrown flowers and foliage into my creations. I place huge emphasis on top quality ingredients using locally sourced and seasonal produce.”
The hair and make-up for the shoot was done by Donna Pronk. We wanted the style for the make-up to be a little dark and moody to dramatise the dark fairytale theme. Donna, used a few fun techniques and we love the over the top eyes and red lips.
Donna is a part-time hair and make-up artist specializing in weddings and matric dances. Her calm and friendly personality makes her the perfect person to have around you on your wedding day. Using professional products, she is amazingly talented and will make sure that you look and feel wonderful on your special day.
Bella Bespoke supplied the gorgeous jewelry that you see in the shoot, from the gorgeous hand chains, earrings, and bling rings, we were totally in awe of the prettiness that surrounded us. Chelsea, from Bella Bespoke comes from two generations of jewelry experts, following in the footsteps of her Grandmother and Mother, she has been surrounded with jewelry from a young age.
“The part I love most about my job is creating unique engagement rings. The whole process never gets old and of course I love the suspense of the proposal! I am a romantic, I can’t help myself! I love anything that has a vintage or art deco look… and diamonds, are always in fashion.
Some advice from me… if you think your man is thinking about proposing, make sure your Pinterest account has all your favourite engagement ring ideas, and make sure your best friend or Mum knows your finger size (this is something that can make or break the perfect proposal!)”
