Dunno whether I stumbled across Hello Nünü or whether Hello Nünü stumbled across Lovilee first, but so glad that our paths crossed and that Hello Nünü is now part of the lovilee family. But what exactly is Hello Nünü? I got in contact with Miss Françoise Brand, the creative behind the brand to find out more…
Tell us a bit about yourself and where the brand originated
I’ve been working in the Property industry for the past eight years in Cape Town, running my own Property Management company. We rent out and manage luxury apartments and homes for short term/holiday lets at the V&A Marina Residential Estate. In 2009 my daughter was born, and my mother and I started knitting her little cotton vests, jerseys and blankets. As a new mom I noticed that there was such a gap in the market for cute and funky kiddies knitwear. I posted a few of our creations onto my Facebook Profile, and I started getting orders from friends and family members and within a few months my little hobby had become a fantastic little business.
It hasn’t been easy – it has taken a lot of work to get to where I am today, especially as I am juggling a full time job, raising a fiery red headed almost-three-year-old daughter and building up my Hello Nünü business at the same time. I feel so Blessed to have had so much support from my family and friends, and of course from the public! It is one thing to love what you do, but it is such a compliment when others love it too!
Why the name Hello Nünü (funny, I call my sisters’ little one Nunu)
I wanted our exceptional keepsake clothing and accessories to have an endearing name… something that people could connect with and also, something of myself in it too. I have always referred to ‘sweet little things’ as ‘nunu’. The addition of the umlaut links to my German heritage, and also great on a design level as it creates a little smiley face!
What ranges do you have and what are your future plans?
Our baby range makes the perfect “welcome to the world” gift with our handmade clothing, blankets and accessories. These exceptional keepsakes are made with the highest attention to detail and from high quality materials. We work very hard to ensure that each item is unique in some way and these bespoke pieces have become so popular that there is now a waiting list.
We have quite an extensive knitwear range for the kiddies: hoodies/vests/scarves/neck warmers/beanies/head warmers/leg warmers, and bedroom range: themed cot blankets/hand knitted bed throws/play mats/toddler bed blankets/hottie covers/cushion covers.
At the moment I am busy designing a Spring-Summer collection of dresses for little girls aged 1-4 years. I am also designing an Adult knitwear range, and a bedding/linen range for Autumn-Winter 2013. It certainly is a very exciting time!
A good friend of mine, who owns ‘Mr and Ms’ clothing, and I are working together to start a series of Trunk Shows that will take place at various venues around Cape Town. The first Trunk Show took place on the 01st of September at the Marina Estate.
My goal for these remaining months of the year, is to start selling some of our range in a shop or two so watch this space!
Who produces all these lovilee items?
I have a wonderful team of ladies working with me. My mother Gaynor, who taught me everything I know, assists in design/knitted and crochet items and my dear grandmother, Helen, knits the cotton vests. I then have a lady who knits for me, and another lady who is in charge of all things crochet. I am so grateful for the women in my life!

about the author
I am a creative at heart, who likes being surrounded by pretty things. My new house was the main inspiration for Lovilee, finding time to prettify, paint and ponder about change. Coffee, lavender, numbers, the color purple and my jeans inspire me. I believe that you should do what you love and love what you do! -
