I recently took a huge leap (of faith and bravery) and started working under my own name – Christie Mann Photography. I had been working alongside Colleen Sevitz for a few years and it was time to move out of that comfort zone and find me and concentrate on what I love, babies and children.
I also run a prop business called Oooh Pretty with my mother Maudeen and it keeps us very busy so I jump at any chance for an outdoor shoot. I don’t do as much studio as I did before but I am finding that chasing the light whether it is at a location shoot for a sweet little newborn or a couple of kids at a playground, is what I love.
I love children’s parties – I normally end up on the floor at the same level at the kids and watch them. I am an observer and I capture the moments and the expressions that the parents miss. One of the best things for me is when the parents see my photographs after the parties – they are amazed at what goes on at kiddie level and I am so blessed to be able to capture those memories and moments. I am so honoured that the photographs I take will be handed down from generation to generation. That is one of the nicest legacies a person can leave – a moment captured in time.
About the shoot
I run a few mini shoots every couple of months and at the end of July, Debbie called me and booked a shoot for Ryan and Julia. It was late afternoon, about an hour before golden hour started and the light was just magical. We shot in a little park and playground surrounded by huge pine trees in Thornhill Estate, Modderfontein.
The two of them were so natural in front of the camera – no self consciousness at all and they both have the most beautiful eyes.
It was all about the light and the light was just perfect!
