Kids pizza made with love

Pizza evenings are fast becoming a little tradition in my house; after all, what kid (or adult for that matter) doesn’t like pizza? Preparing your own pizza dough and all the toppings are a real labour of love and it requires all the patience in the world (especially with 2 little helpers) but if you ignore the mess and all the prep work required and focus on the joy that comes from letting the kids be in control, it will be the best kids pizza you’ve ever tasted, I guarantee it.

The basic pizza base recipe is as follows:

  • 375ml (1 1/2 cups) warm water
  • 2 tsp (7g/1 sachet) dried yeast
  • Pinch of caster sugar
  • 600g (4 cups) plain flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 60ml (1/4 cup) olive oil, plus extra for brushing

Combine the water, yeast and sugar in a small bowl and set aside until the yeast is activated and it starts to foam. In the meantime combine the flour and salt in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the yeast mixture and oil. Use a round-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix until the mixture is combined. Then get your hands stuck in and bring the dough together in the bowl. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Place in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Leave dough in a warm spot to rise for 30 minutes or until dough doubles in size.

Make a delicious homemade tomato sauce with some hidden veggies for a nutritious topping and prepare some of the following toppings for your little one to decorate his/her own pizza in any way they wish.

Topping ideas:

  • Grated cheese (mozzarella or cheddar)
  • Feta Cheese
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Mushrooms
  • Tinned pineapple
  • Roasted peppers
  • Broccoli florets
  • Ham, bacon or salami
  • Shredded chicken
  • Tuna
  • Olives
  • Tinned sweetcorn
  • Sliced courgettes
  • Spinach
