The proposal…
We were living in Johannesburg as Richard had returned to full time studies. He still had 18 months left and we had agreed not to get married until he had finished his Diploma. Shortly after my birthday, he surprised me with a day out in the city. We went for breakfast, enjoyed shopping and then just after lunch he insisted on a visit to the Zoo despite the threat of rain. I was excited to see some of the animals! It was getting late when he led me to the bird aviary. We sat down to just enjoy the sights and sounds. I closed my eyes and when I heard him talking I opened my eyes. He was down on one knee in front of me. I could not believe that my best friend was proposing to me! To celebrate we enjoyed martinis at the Westcliff Hotel, watching the lights of the city.

The big day…
We chose 26 April 2012 as our wedding date and decided on Stanley Island in Plettenberg Bay as it represents our love for nature – both bush and sea. Our colours were navy blue, apple green and white, reflecting the environment around us. We went for a very DIY approach and made all our decorations (including metres of bunting, 100 ribbon wands and homemade biscuits) ourselves. We included as many friends and family in the planning and this made the day extra special.
