Lovilee beach wedding {Lizelle Lotter}

I am so excited to bring you the wedding of my friends, Marinda May’s wedding earlier this year. David and Marinda tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on the 2nd of May, on Bloubergstrand in the Western Cape. The wedding was a lovilee affair with the sushi reception held at the Blowfish Restaurant. Lizelle from Lizelle Lotter Photography captured this couples’ special day.

With both Marinda and David being photographers, it only made sense to use old camera film rolls for the ‘save the dates’. Marinda made sure that the wedding had plenty a detail and there was quite a bit of DIY’ing going on. My favourite décor item on the wedding had to be the green proteas that lined a pathway on the beach for the ceremony.

How did the two of you meet?

David’s mom and a friend of mines’ mother were co-workers. They tried to pair the two of us up for a while, but the one or the other was always tied up in some or other relationship. The day I told my friend that I broke up with my boyfriend at the time, she thought it the best news ever!

How did David propose?
We regularly visit Lakenvlei in Dullstroom for holiday and started a tradition of a Woolworths picnic amongst the trees. Last year we again re-visited the resort for our annual break. After our picnic, David announced that it was time for some ‘funtivities’. He took out a black container, gave me a pen and paper and told me to write down my dreams for the next 5 years. He explained that we were going to create a time-capsule which we were going to bury and retrieve again in the year 2020.

I had to set up the camera for this memorable event, and whilst concentrating on this all, he said from behind that all we now needed was a ‘photo of our engagement’?! I was totally confused, turned around and then realised what was happening when David went down on one knee with a ring in hand! I was so caught up in the moment that I didn’t even answer, just grabbed the ring! Soon realising my mistake, I handed the ring back so that he could ask me in a propoer fashion… We still laugh about this whole confusion and how I, through tears of joy finally answered ‘YES’!

What did you most enjoy about the planning process?

The day dreaming… how everything will look on the day, the paging through magazines and browsing of blogs and other on-line spaces for ideas. I enjoyed seeing how my original colour scheme moved into a total opposite direction. We started planning a wedding in the woods and ended up on the beach!

Do you have any tips or advice for other brides-to-be?

Have the wedding that you want to have, make the decision of what you really want and what you can do without. If you decide on a destination wedding, make 100% sure that the air-hostesses keep your dress safe, do not attempt to stuff it in your hand luggage. Enjoy every moment on the day – jump on the bed and just have FUN!

What were the DIY project on the wedding?

We had quite a few! I designed the save the dates, invites, programs and guest albums with space for polaroids, ‘corn’fetti containers and other stationary myself. My mother-in-law and I collected the brooches for my bouquet that I created. David’s boutonnière was also hand-made and he had the knife and forks engraved.

A big congratulations to Marinda & David. May your marriage be filled with love and joy and may you be blessed! You can also view Marinda’s kitchen tea here.
