DIY Wedding at The Salt Eatery

Ruan & Elri Lotz tied the knot earlier this year, and Figure of 8 Photography was there to capture their special memories. The ceremony took place at Diep in Die Berg Chapel and their reception at Salt Charcuterie, Hazelwood. Their wedding took around four months to plan and there were lots of DIY details on the day.

How did you meet?
We met through a mutual friend that knew we would be perfect for each other. She is also known as the “matchmaker” within our friends, setting up three couples already before. We met then one night at Ruans’ house, together with other friends, and immediately connected and stayed up till the early morning hours drinking red wine and sharing life stories, even when everybody had already left. It was only three months later we started to officially see each other and was ready to enter a relationship.

Tell us more about the proposal:
We have this thing we do… we play chess. Even on holidays at cocktail bars, we play chess. Ruan begged Elri one night after dinner to play a game of chess because she had won the previous couple of rounds. Not really in the mood, Elri finally agreed to play only one game.Meanwhile Ruan had placed the engagement ring on the “Queen”, hoping that Elri would see the ring as soon as she got to the table outside that was lit with candles and fairy lights. As Elri approached the table, she did not see the ring at first, but as soon as she was on move three, she shouted LOUD and said YES! CHECK MATE!

How did you decide on the theme and/or the colour palette?
We had an “urban trendy” theme with a touch of old school. Elri was inspired by the new blush pink color (inspired by Ellie Saab), the dress was Ivory colored. The neckline was a sweetheart style, fitted at the waist, with a blush colored belt flowing into an A-line gown, with soft flower detail and layered Ivory and Blush colored material. Elri’s engagement ring is Rose-Gold, so she emphasized on the theme by matching her accessories with tones of Rose-Gold, diamante and Morganite stone. She kept her hair soft with curls and a braid with a trendy Rose-Gold headband. The armband was made by Elri herself that was made of lace and material roses that matched the flowers on her dress. Her shoes matched the Ivory coloured dress with Rose-Gold details thanks to Forever New.

Please tell us more about the DIY details on the day?
We made most of the décor ourselves. We painted the “guest-list” on wooden pallets with fairy lights in between. We also hand-cut and strung the patterned bunting flags (approx 85m in total). The underplates were customized with laser engraved cut-out and our name and date of wedding. It had a saying on “Lotz of Love” – our surname is Lotz. The serviette ring holders that was in the shape of an owl was handmade by Ruans’ mother that said: “Owl you need is Love”.

Do you have any advice for engaged couples?
Stay true to yourself and be who you are as a couple. Remember the day is about you two, not the auntie or cousin that is not invited, or the person who has something to say. It’s your day, your once in a lifetime experience and no one can take that away from you.
