Wedding at The Litchi Orchard {Duane Smith}

Byron + Tammy tied the knot earlier this year at The Litchi Orchard. Their special day was captured by the talented, Duane Smith.

How did the two of you meet?
A mutual friend of ours, who is actually our photographer, Duane Smith’s, wife to be, worked with Byron in Richards Bay and had been telling me that she would like us to meet. I stopped by one day to see her and Byron arrived at work with a friend and greeted me with the hugest smile on his face. He got into contact with me that same day, we decided to meet up and not long after knew that we were made for each other.

Tell us more about the proposal?
I had no idea that the proposal was going to happen. We were living in Cape Town at that time with his family. Byron said he wanted to go for a walk on the beach and get waffles afterwards… The weather was not great and it was windy, but I am a sucker for waffles so I agreed to go. We got to the beach and after convincing me to go for a walk in that weather, he handed me a shell that had the ring in it, once I realized what was going on he proposed to me. We then went and had some champagne at a wine farm to celebrate together. He had also gone and organized for my family to fly down to Cape Town, where they were waiting at a lovely restaurant to celebrate with us. It was such a beautiful and special day to be able to have everyone we loved with us.

Was your hubby involved in any of the planning?
Byron was definitely involved in the planning. He would patiently sit with me nearly every evening looking at all the décor ideas, menu’s, venues, etc… that I had found. He enjoyed giving me ideas and expressing his thoughts on everything. He also asked to be given some tasks to do and did them with a smile on his face. I really enjoyed having him involved with the planning process.

Did you have any DIY projects on your wedding?
To be honest, most of our wedding was DIY. Everyone got involved and we had so much help making everything. Our families really did a lot of work to make our wedding as special as it was and having all the hand made items there just made it that much more sentimental to us. There was around 600 origami cranes, folded for us to hang at the ceremony and use as centrepieces.

We used decorated Consol jars for the welcome drinks and centrepieces and did all the floral arrangements ourselves. Most of the wooden signs were made as well as the wooden boards under the center pieces. We made the little thank you cards that went in the succulent wedding favours. A family friend made the bridesmaids dresses. All the serviettes and my garter were also made for us. Friends and family also came to help set everything up for the big day.

We are really thankful to everyone that was a part of this process as it would not have been possible without them.

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be when it comes to planning a wedding?
Stick to the budget that you had, don’t go into debt because of a wedding. It is easy to plan a beautiful wedding on a budget. Allow people to help you wherever possible, it is less stress for you. Enjoy the process of planning your wedding and if 1 or 2 things go wrong on the day, forget about it, it goes by so fast, just enjoy one of the most beautiful days you will have.
