When we moved house just under a year ago I stumbled across Gonk, an awesome shop literally just around the corner from our new possy in Linden. Little did I know the shop opened its doors a mere two weeks before we moved! I just love popping into Gonk, they have a lovilee variety of home decor, kids and gifting items and I have become great friends with the owners, Gerhardt and Kosie! The shop is celebrating their first birthday – read more about their special offers below and have a great give-away for you!
About Gonk and the owners
Their backgrounds could not be more diverse – Kosie studied hospitality management and worked in the travel industry signing contracts with airlines and tour operators and Gerhardt comes from an art background and worked in retail for many years as store designer, creative manager and visual and concept manager.
In 2015, after we assisted a friend in Clarens, to merchandise her store, we realized it was time to make our dreams a reality and GONK, the shop, was born. The time was right to take the big leap and leave the corporate world behind. After months of searching we found the perfect spot in the Heart of Linden. We felt right at home and were welcomed with open arms. The name ‘GONK’ is a combination of our initials – Gehardt Oosthuisen and Kosie Nagel (inverted).
It is our love of beautiful things, the love of shopping and of cause, the love for each other that ties it all together. It has been a life long dream of ours to have a little shop; a place where we can share what we love with others.
What can people expect to find in-store?
Gonk’s philosophy is first and foremost affordable gifting for all. We love to support local and take great pride in the exclusive ranges we keep. We source new products on a regular basis to keep it fresh and on trend. Some of latest finds include:
- ALoveSupreme – Intelligent and creative with a dash of whimsy, aLoveSupreme is the imaginative range of stationery, apparel and home-ware with a sneaky sense of humour and a whole lot of heart.
- Net ‘n kameel – an original handmade jewelry range that includes brooches, earrings and pendants made from wood, metals and Perspex.
- You can now add decorative detail to your home and office with a colour rich range that brings back the nostalgic cupi doll as well as clean cut heart shapes and other playful niknaks combining a soft and masculine mix of natural wood and resin.
What is the best selling item(s) currently in store?
Every house has that one wall or one corner where Sandra Pelser’s art will be ideal. These make the greatest gift for your art loving friend. Each lady tells a story of her own and might just be a match to that friend you have in mind.
Chicken feet bowls and jugs just gives every kitchen that fun twist. Use the bowl for your eggs or to plant a herb, or just serve your juice chicken feet style. Tea time has never been this quirky. The quirky milk jugs and sugar pots is the perfect gift for that friend who loves making a good impression on her guests.
3D puzzles for the kids make a great gift to keep the kids busy for hours. From building your own airplane to adding furniture to your existing doll house, it’s good fun, educational and affordable. (the mini ones make for great party favours)
What other products or services do you provide?
We have an on-line store where you can purchase some of the products that we stock in store. We provide shipping options all across South Africa. We also exhibit at markets from time to time that includes The Linden Market.
In addition to running our store, we also do bespoke wedding decor and flowers as well as themed kiddies parties with a difference. We consult with our client to understand their needs and we put a Gonk seal of approval on every event we do. We admire old school and tradition and we are great lovers of handmade concepts.
Do you have any plans to expand?
We are currently looking for a location for Gonk Two, but finding something is hard. We believe the right spot will find us. We want to maintain our integrity and what Gonk stands for wherever we go – but we definitely have places to go.
The shop in Linden, Randburg, is celebrating it’s first birthday, they have decided to share the love by making gifting more affordable with some great specials on some pre-selected Gonk favorites. These include items like Pretti Cool products, scarves, adult colouring books, toys and many more. You will receive a free item when you buy one of the items on promotion.
