DIY country wedding

This DIY country wedding was filled with hydrangeas and took around 6 months to plan. Planning commenced on the day the couple received a “wedding gift” from an anonymous person in the groom (Reghardt’s) bank account. Reghardt’s sister acted as the wedding planner bringing Wianrie’s dreams for the day to life. The wedding took place at Evergreen Estate in Mpumalanga and was filled with DIY details.

Reghardt and I both love nature and we don’t like very bold colours. We like to keep things plain and simple yet classy. And that’s what we did. That led me to walkingdown the isle with “Turning page (instrumental) – Sleeping at last”. I also kept in mind what Reghardt likes and enjoys as this was not just my big day but his as well.

The couple met in high school, being formally introduces by the bride’s sister. After school life got in the way and he left Port Natal to go to Affies in Pretoria and they dated long distance whilst she was still at school. After school she went to Tuks and he in turn back to the family Farm in HLuhluwe – so the long distance carried on but all worked out well…

They decided making a road trip from attending friend’s wedding in George. The afternoon prior to the wedding Wianrie had her nails done, it was overcast and looked like it was going to rain. Reghardt was eager to go for our beach walk even though she had wished to stay in. even though it was cold and dreary the day was brightened when he proposed on the beach!

DIY details
With a very small budget they were lucky to have assistance from many creative friends and family. The brode’s sister-in-law’s, mother-in-law has a big garden filled with hydrangeas. The day before the wedding they cut as many as we could and also added some ivy that was growing in her garden. The guys were climbing ladders to hang the ivy wreaths and the girls draped the ivy around two cocktail tables.

The couple had wooden boxes made that could be used as storage afterwards. The boxes served as the coffee/cocktail tables on the day. Their goal was to buy décor that they could use in their home afterwards. They bought glass vases that they wanted in their house and that would work for the wedding. Her sister and mother-in-law also bought some that they wanted for their houses, but that they could use. They also bought woven ratten baskets for the flowers.. Wianrie’s sister made the invites and save the dates.

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be?
Do what you want and not what the world expects you to do for a wedding. When we got engaged we did not know if we wanted a big or small intimate wedding, but in the end we decided on a non traditional wedding and to have it in the morning with finger snacks. Enjoy everyone moment and don’t fight about anything.
