My Home Tour Part 1: Outdoor patio revamp

I am excited to share the first major project that I have done in our new house with you. The patio revamp was done in collaboration with Prominent Paints who sponsored all of the paint and the materials needed for this make-over. I was really impressed with the advice they offered on both the colour and product choice as well as the product quality. (See some of the crazy before images lower down on the post)

The inspiration behind the patio revamp

I recently purchased the House & Leisure before and after reader make-over edition and was in awe with what I saw. There were so many lovilee homes in the book, one of my favourites being make-over #4 as it so closely resembles aspects of our new home. I was so inspired by this great edition that I decided on a mini patio make-over.

Prominent Paints contacted me around the same time to offer some paint for a make-over and the timing could not be better. I met with one of their in-house experts on the various products that they offer. We had some damp in the walls that we had treated but were still only in raw cement, there were also some cracks in need of filling.

Choosing the right paint products for the outdoor patio revamp

Prominent Paints suggested that I make use of Prominent Damp Cure. This serves as a primer on the raw plaster bits and doubles up to assist with the damp issues. This product is applied via either a brush or roller and is basically like a paint with superpowers. (Note that it has a really really strong smell, so use it in a well ventilated area)

The cracks in the walls were a bit more tricky to fix. First all the flaking and peeling paint needed to be removed. Then all the cracks and plaster defects had to be filled. Thereafter I applied the Damp Cure Primer and will soon paint all the walls with Prominent Premium Satin Silk.

Choosing the right colour paint for my patio

I had a paint colour in mind and had selected and painted samples a while before, but none of the colours seemed to come out right. I then visited a Prominent Paint Decor Centre to view their colour swatches (see the partner store closest to you here). They had a load of different colour charts for me to look at. I had been looking at a grey palette, but was battling to get something that did not reflect blue when painted.

The store owner showed me a page of just greys with different undertones. It was immediately clear that I wanted a yellow undertone. We then looked at some charts of actual painted colours of their standard range, but also cards of custom mixed colours. Again I made a decision and we compared the result by looking at the colour in daylight and not artificial lighting. I had a sample mixed and am happy to say that it is a 100% match to my vision!

The actual colour is a warm grey mixed from a Pastel base code: W-PKC=6Y+6.50 W-PRE=47.50 W-PYA=4Y+45.50 W-PWA=7Y+44.00 I just love the colour that the patio came out! #greyisthenewblack

Photographer Wynand van der Merwe was kind enough to take some images of my patio, and I am glad he did it on time, as Marshall (our dog) managed to destroy the roses in the pots the day after! It gave me time to test the durability of the paint, even though it was full of muddy paw prints it was easy to clean with just a brush and water.

We had a sliding farm door installed that really brought the look I wanted to achieve together. Wall plates are by Sugar & Vice and Mr Price Home. The butler Sink was purchased from CTM.

      Hellos,

I had it made by a local wire artist. Drew the words and gave him the measurement and then he made it for me. Maybe Tendai from The Desert Rose project will be able to assist? Just look on Facebook.

  2. Hi Kari
This is stunning. Where did you get the logs under the braai? I’ve got a similar set up and have been wanting to put logs underneath the braai but struggling to find good looking logs 🙂

      Hello Trisha,

Thank you for the lovilee compliment! I actually just asked our gardener to chop up pieces of branches that we had cut off in the garden when we moved in. Was a bit of a jungle vibe. I would suggest that you maybe get in contact with tree fellers, you can sometimes get from them or maybe look at the garden rubble dumps? Sorry!
