A friend of mine recently got engaged and has been having trouble deciding on where the best places would be to do a couple shoot in Johannesburg. They obviously want to keep it unique, but still show that they stay in Joburg. I’ve been searching far and wide to help with ideas and through that I’d provide the other Johannesburg lovilees with some ideas & inspiration!
It is worth noting that some of the venues do charge a fee or that require some permission forms to be completed, to let you photograph there. It is always best to either check with your photographer or with the venue itself.
Here is our list of the best places to do a couple shoot in Johannesburg
1. The Gautrain
My favourite place at the moment is the Gautrain and/or Gautrain stations, an option for either Jo’burg or Pretoria lovilees.
2. Newtown
The bright and vibrant colours of the city as a background is a good option for a fun shoot. Scenes in Newtown can include the Newtown Museum Africa or the Nelson Mandela Bridge. There are also graffiti walls to add an interesting element to the shoot. (View more images here)
3. Maboneng Precinct
Maboneng, meaning ‘Place of Light’, is an urban neighbourhood on the east side of Johannesburg CBD. Maboneng is home to several independent retail, restaurants and entertainment venues as well as loft apartments, offices, hotel, a museum and creative factory spaces in an urban landscape. Completed developments include Arts on Main, Common Ground and more. (view more images here)
4. Gold Reef City
Gold Reef City is a truly unique Johannesburg destination. I personally worked there part-time whilst at school and studying… It is the perfect backdrop for a fun, colourful e-session with the playground fun-rides in the background. (see more images here)
5. Emmarentia Botanical Gardens / Emmarentia Dam
The Emmarentia Botanical Gardens is a great place to do a couple shoot. It has wide open spaces, curated gardens, the Emmarentia dam and more. There is even spaces where you are allowed bringing your four footed friends with to share in the shoot. Feed the ducks, have a picnic or ride on bicycles, there are quite a few options to get creative. (view more images here)
6. University of Johannesburg / WITS
A great idea for an engagement shoot is to have it at the university or institution either of you might have attended. Wits has such great architecture, Images below by Daniel West Photography.
