This & That

Q+A with Kim Gensler {Photographer}

Kim Gensler is a modern lifestyle family photographer located in Pretoria East, Gauteng. She offers photo sessions that include a stay over in Mabalingwe Nature Reserve just outside of Bela Bela and a guided game drive. Truly a very unique experience and only 90 minutes from Pretoria, Gauteng! We took some time out today to interview this lovilee lady…

Q: How did you become a photographer?
I moved from the United States to South Africa + the Bushveld in 2009, after graduating from University and working in a science museum for several years. My passion for travel, adventure and Africa’s amazing wildlife and scenery ultimately led me to the safari industry and the Bush, where my interest in photography began to consume all of my free time. It was a wonderful place to perfect natural light photography! My great obsession (and frustration!) was toying with the sun and shadows to produce that perfect image. The decision to pursue photography as a career grew naturally from this experience. And I love it!

Q: How would you describe your style?
Earthy and organic describes the essence of my photographs. I use natural, candid poses set against natural light and scenery to capture genuine elegance and emotion. I do, however, shoot indoors with natural light for newborn photography and/or boudoir sessions for individuals or couples that are looking for sensual memories. Boudoir sessions are also popular for brides wanting to give their future husbands a little something before the big day.

Q: Describe yourself in one sentence?
I am passionately curious about the world around me and my purpose in it.

Q: What has been some of your favourite shot{s} taken to date?
I have lots of favourites! Seems like every time I take new photos they become my favourites. But if I were to choose photos from a particular session that I thought were some of my best images, I would say they would be from the session I did for a family that booked my Family Bush Getaway package.

Q: What are your favourite kinds of shoots?
Children are my favourite subjects and are absolutely delightful to photograph because of their natural curiosity and expressiveness. They are so sweet!

Q: What is some of you favourite poses?
My favorite “poses” are actually candid poses. I really enjoy capturing children and families interacting naturally with each other and during a family session I actually tell my clients to pretend that I’m not even there! Just makes for a more “emotional” image that will bring back fun.

Just for fun…
Q: Your favourite hang out?
My favourite hangout is with my boyfriend up at our house in Mabalingwe Nature Reserve. We spend every weekend up there enjoying the bush and we even have a resident bush big family of 7 that come visit ever night! Such a special place for me/us.

Q: What do you do when you are not behind the lens?
I always enjoy to travel and I take a trip back to the States almost every year. Last year we also visited Thailand. Such a magical destination and I would highly recommend to anyone. We also take several trips to Kruger National Park during the course of the year. Ya, I know, I’m a bush addict! You can view some of my photos on my Facebook page.

And these are some of my {Kari’s} favourites! Where have you ever seen anything sooo cute?!
