Once Upon A Time…

by Kim Gensler Photography

Once upon a time...

We all remember playing dress up like a princess or sword fighting like a knight. We wore whatever dress we could find and there was always a princess crown in our wardrobe. And that towel always made the best cape! We would play outside for hours pretending to be princes and princesses. I’m sure everyone has a similar memory.

I wanted the ‘Once Upon A Time’ mini sessions to be simple yet moving. I wanted to re-create those memories I had as a child dancing in the wind in my pink dress waiving my wand. I wanted a natural, home-made feel. I wanted crowns, swords, glitter and capes!

After my failed attempt to find swords and crowns that would fit the look that I wanted, I decided that I would make my own! Yep, that’s me, Krafty Kim. Lol!

I did a bit of research on ‘crown making’ and found a few samples that I could work from. I decided to go for a blue fabric crown for the boys and a lacy, glittery crown for the girls. And they turned out great! I always give a small gift to the participating children and decided I would send them home with their own crowns.
Because my wood working skills are almost non existent, I got some help from ‘That Little Shop’. They made me two very sturdy wooden swords which the boys loved! The capes were pretty simple and I used the same fabric used to make the crowns.

The ‘Once Upon A Time’ mini sessions were held Friday & Saturday, 20 & 21 March. I had 10 lovely children to photograph, 7 boys and 3 girls. There are four more themed mini sessions this year. Email kim@kgphotography.co.za for dates and more information.
