Blogging 101: Monetising your blog

So you have a blog and maybe an on-line store, but how do you reach and cater for international advertisers and customers? There are various ways in which a blogger can earn income from. Remember that if the sole reason for you owning a blog is to earn money, it is probably not the best way to get rich. But you certainly can earn an income from your blog, and here are some ways to get started:

  1. Google ads
This is literally the easiest way to start generating revenue. Sign up on www.adsense.com create adverts and add them to your blog. Revenue gets generated from the amount of views or the amount of clicks on adverts and you get paid once your reach a specified threshold. You can also exclude some categories to block adverts not applicable to your blog from appearing.
  2. Get advertisers or sponsors
The main way a blog can generate income is from signing up advertisers or sponsors. But, few people will give you money if you have no content that they can look at and no readership statistics that can substantiate their investment. Getting people to invest in your dreams and vision takes time and is not always easy. Do what you love and enjoy and, once you’ve built up a solid following, take it from there.
  3. Banner ads
There are various companies that you can sign up with that will show adverts on your site related to your content or reader preferences. One example is Google Ads, you get paid once you reach a specific income amount and can control the ads to a certain extent. Your income is based on clicks and impressions that the adverts receive on your site.
  4. Sponsored posts or give-aways
This refers to companies or their agencies contacting you to promote or mention their brand in an article with hyperlinks. In return you receive a payment.
  5. Adding an on-line store
In the previous post we discussed adding an on-line store to your site. This only works if you have a product to sell.
  6. Sell your expertise
Some people offer their expertise like consultation services etc. on their blog and promote or sell them from there.
  7. Affiliate links

But how can you make it quick, easy and safe for someone to pay you for the services above, and even more so when they are an international customer?

The answer is PayPal – a faster, easier and more secure way to let people pay you. PayPal is widely accepted, readily recognized and offers the following options for sellers:

  1. Web and on-line payments
PayPal’s Express Checkout for instance (mentioned in my previous blog post), offers a shorter check out process for one time payments. PayPal can also offer you an easy way to collect recurring payments for a fixed or changing amount.
  2. Offline payment solutions
  3. On-line invoicing: you can quickly issue a professional invoice from your PayPal account with a PayPal button embedded which your customer will click on to complete the payment on the PayPal website.
  4. Payment via email: you can also create a simple request for payment that will be sent to your customer via email.

Whether you are accepting or making an offshore payment, PayPal gives you the flexibility to accept as many as 26 currencies, giving your customers the convenience to pay with their local currency. PayPal has over 173 million active accounts worldwide who look for the PayPal way to pay.
