Seven tips for the perfect portrait session

The lovilees from Maiden Moose Photography sent me this gorgeous portrait session at Harmonie Proteas for consideration and I just swooned all over it. I am still so in love with the Marsala trend of last year as this colour just seems to warm up these cold days we are having at the moment.

When you know the right tips and tricks to use in a portrait session and the person you work with feels relaxed in front of the camera combined with having some fun with the planning around your session the results can truly be unique and beautiful. With a little bit of planning and using some unique service providers we really wanted to create and capture a portrait session that was versatile with various looks in one session. For this specific shoot we focused on playing with different types of light and textures as well as bold tones to showcase Emma’s beautiful features.

Here is some of our tips for the client

  1. Work with professionals: From the venue, makeup and florals all the way to the photographer, find suppliers you enjoy working with and familiarise yourself with their style. This will allow you to enjoy the day and more importantly enjoy the results of your photo session.
  2. Don’t be afraid to be bold and creative with your choices! And don’t be afraid to share some of your ideas and the vision you have for your session with the suppliers.
  3. Remember portrait sessions are intimate so try and arrange it at a venue that caters for you to have space and not feel crowded.
  4. Light is always important: Your photographer will be able to make recommendations around what type of light and time of the day is important to shoot in to achieve various looks- they are your light experts so don’t be afraid to trust them in terms of when and where to shoot at the venue.

As the shoot took place there were different types of light sources to use (typically the first 20 minutes of the shoot is a bit more bright). These type of scenarios can add various different types of looks in your session. Why not plan your outfits and look around the light? For this specific session we started shooting a more crisp and clean look earlier the day and as we neared sunset we changed the outfits to be a bit more dramatic and dreamy…complimenting the rich red protea colours during the golden hour.

  5. Find a venue that has various areas to shoot. For this session we had the benefit of starting in a forest and catching the sunset between the flowers. Variety allows more unique looks and of course adds to the fun factor of the shoot.
  6. Makeup/Flowers: Don’t be afraid to opt in for a bold lip colour half way through your shoot to add some magic and a different look to the session. For variety you can also consider a flower crown that works with your outfit. We also requested a ribbon that matched the last outfit, but the bold touch worked with the light theme earlier the day too.
  7. Don’t be afraid to add some bold props to your shoot, for this session we ended the shoot with smoke flairs again small unique touches adds a lot to your portrait session.
