What are Turkish towels and what are they used for? The lovilees over at OREJEN, a local decor and all things wood and wood related store in Linden, Johannesburg introduced me to these towels from The Cotton Company. I was sceptical at first but agreed that I would review one and give my honest opinion in a post.
What is a Turkish Towel?
Turkish towels, sometimes called Peshtemal, Hammam or Fouta towels, are made from Turkish Cotton, a premium cotton that has extra long fibers. Using longer fiber cotton means fewer joins, which results in stronger and smoother cotton threads. Because of this unique material, Turkish towels are known to become even softer, fluffier, and more absorbent with successive washings. (source)
Uses for turkish towels
Traditionally Turkish towels were used at the Turkish baths (hammams) in Anatolia. Nowadays they get used for an array of different functions.
- Bath Towels
- Beach towels as they are highly absorbent and fast drying
- Travel Towel as they are compact and lightweight
- Baby wrapping or swaddle blankets
- Gym or Yoga Towels
- As Blanket or Throw
- Wrap or shawl as they come in an array of fashionable and on trend weaves and colours
- Picnic blanket
My review on Turkish Towels
I absolutely LOVE this towel and have no idea why I only discovered it now.
What I really like is
- It is seriously pretty and looks great in our revamped bathroom.
- It is really, really absorbent and almost works like a ‘shammy’ to dry water from your skin.
- The towel dries very fast. I am not a towel rail fan and have hooks everywhere but it makes the traditional towels a bit smelly in wetter winter weather up in Johannesburg.
- It is HUUUUUGE and can easy serve as wrap around. The size of this beauty is 100cm x 180cm
- It gets softer with each wash, not harder as with normal towels (I don’t make use of any softners or tumbledrying).
My ONLY issue with this specific towel is that little people with dirty hands and feet gets it dirty rather quickly on the white parts but this is the issue with other towels as well. O, and that my hubby keeps on stealing it…
