There’s something so satisfying about a good before-and-after reveal, especially when it’s a beautiful room makeover. I’m thrilled to share my latest project: a light and airy guest room transformation with subtle touches of pink, all brought to life in collaboration with D-Con. This room now feels like a breath of fresh air and is nothing short of Pinterest Perfect.
The journey to achieving this serene and stylish space was made possible with the help of professionals. While DIY has its place, certain tasks like electrical work and carpentry require expert skills—areas where I’m happy to outsource. This collaboration with D-Con made all the difference in realizing my vision.
Who is D-Con?
D-Con, short for Delta Construction, is a renowned company established in 2011. Specializing in renovations, new builds, and building maintenance projects, D-Con caters to both residential and small-scale commercial sectors. Based in Lynnwood, Pretoria, they are the sister company of Studio Delta, known for producing handcrafted, swoon-worthy local furniture. For added peace of mind, D-Con is affiliated with the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council).
Inspiration behind the Guest Room Makeover
Every year after watching The Block Australia, I find myself brimming with ideas. Last season, I was particularly inspired by some wall panels used in the show’s homes, but sourcing them locally proved impossible. Undeterred, I sketched out plans and worked with Vusi from Native Decor, who custom-made the panels that now serve as a striking headboard. The room’s color scheme was inspired by two original art pieces I purchased at the Konfetti Love Christmas Market, and that’s when I knew my vision was coming together.
I had the wall panels ready for a while but was unsure about the installation. I also wanted to replace the cupboard doors as a DIY project but quickly realized it was more challenging than anticipated—especially after attempting a kitchen revamp in our rental unit. When D-Con reached out to assist, I was beyond thrilled.
Their site visit was a game-changer, and within just three days, my dream guest room became a reality. The results exceeded all my expectations.
Before and After: The Transformation
1. A Fresh Coat of White Paint
I was amazed at the transformation that a simple change in paint color brought to the room. We chose a pure white, and it completely altered the feel of the space in the best way possible. I initially feared it might feel too clinical, but the dark floors provided a perfect balance, and the white was a clear winner. D-Con expertly recoated the ceiling and walls, eliminating imperfections and giving the room a flawless finish.
2. Swapping the Ceiling Fan for Downlights
The old ceiling fan was more of an eyesore than a functional feature, so I was thrilled to see it go. D-Con’s electrician removed the outdated fan and installed four perfectly placed downlights. These new lights not only brighten the room beautifully but also add a modern touch. Additionally, two new wall plugs were installed behind the bed, making the room much more functional.
3. Upgrading to Shaker Style Cupboard Doors
The old cupboard doors were falling apart, with peeling wrap that made the room feel dated. Replacing them with custom-made shaker style doors was a game-changer. I found the perfect handles at a great price, and D-Con’s team expertly installed everything. Their attention to detail was impressive—they even added melamine wrap to cover exposed joints, elevating the cupboard’s look.
4. Installing a Unique Headboard
The headboard is the standout feature of this room. Initially, I considered paneling all the walls, but each wall’s unique shape made that impractical. Instead, I focused on one wall, and it became the room’s showstopper. I’m incredibly grateful for the expert installation and painting that brought this vision to life.
5. Custom Door Arches
How cool are these custom-made door arches? Created by Native Decor and installed by D-Con, they transform a plain door into a beautiful focal point, complementing the bathroom’s arches perfectly.
6. Extending the Bay Window Curtain Rails
One of my pet peeves was the short curtain rails on my bay window, which hid the window’s true shape. D-Con custom bent new rails and reinstalled them, allowing the window to shine as a beautiful architectural feature, day or night.
The Finishing Touches
- Bedside tables: To keep the focus on the headboard, I chose minimalistic side tables with thin gold frames and glass tops from Superbalist.
- Reading lights: The white-on-white wall-mounted side lamps are from Iconomy, purchased some time ago, and they blend seamlessly into the space.
- Bedding: I fell in love with tartan bedding after seeing it on The Block Australia. The locally made set by Phlo Studios adds a touch of country romance to the room.
- Curtains: The sheer curtains are from H&M Home, adding a soft, elegant touch to the overall decor.
