Choosing the right seating solution for your home is something I realised to be especially important since we had a new little family member a few years ago. With hindsight I probably would not have opted for the light coloured couch we bought, but I still adore the dining room chairs we discovered!
While writing this article I thought about the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. Daddy Bear’s chair was much too hard for Goldilocks, but it was perfect for Daddy, it was sturdy and served its purpose. Mommy’s chair was soft and comfy, a chair where she could relax and find rest. And baby’s chair was the one that Goldilocks preferred, but sadly not the best option for her.
Your home situation might change over the years and so will your furniture choices. Moms with smaller children, or couples that are just starting out have totally different ideas about furniture. As Mommies we would probably opt for either removable covers on couches and chairs, or colours, textures and patterns that show stains less. The alternative would be easier to clean surfaces like leather or plastics. This does not mean that you have to compromise on style! You might prefer these seating options in rooms frequently used, but add some occasional chairs to other rooms that look and feel different and serve completely other purposes.
If you use furniture for entertaining and dining with adults you could try the bolder light colours, smoother textures and patterns. It is advised to keep the purpose and the people who will be making use of the seating in mind. Obviously the room in which you will be using the seating and the colours thereof will also have a huge influence on your choice.
