Before & After: Alpine shutters from Mediterranean Lifestyle

A little while ago I introduced you to Mediterranean Lifestyle, a company that installs a whole range of window shutters in both Johannesburg or Durban. Their shutters include the entry level Alpine timber range, Premium Range, Shoji Screens as well as Security shutters and outdoor blinds.

To showcase their new shutters these lovilees and I worked together to bring you a before and after of my lounge windows where they installed some of the new and affordable Alpine Timber Shutters. I have wanted a shutter on the bay window in specific in my lounge area since we moved into the house. As it faces our driveway and the street it is necessary to have something in front of the window, but as you can see in the ‘before’ images a curtain literally takes the whole bay window effect away.

But first things first, Lets start with some before images of the lounge. You can see that you can barely see which one is the bay window, but it is the second one.

The Installation by Mediterranean Lifestyle

Mediterranean Lifestyle is a local, owner managed company with its head office situated in Durban, South Africa. they are a second generation family run business that has grown from a manufacturer of a single range of timber Mediterranean Shutters to a true window covering specialist and have been in business for over 25 years. From the start I received email updates on when I could expect a consultation, measurements taken and when the installers would arrive with my shutters.

The installation took about 4 hours as the bay window is a little harder to install than the traditional straight / flat windows, but the guys were very neat. There was even a special custom ceiling build for the bay window to make the installation perfectly rounded off. They had material to protect my wooden floor, a vacuum cleaner that they kept vacuuming the dust from the drilling etc and all the tools that they needed to do a seamless installation. They even gave me a little training on how to open and close the shutters for optimal use. When they were done there were just pretty left.

There were two optional extras that I could choose from for the shutters. Having them split the top and the bottom so that you could either open the top or the bottom or both as illustrated below. I also opted to have the middle bar on each shutter which gives them added strength.

Designed to be cost effective while still maintaining quality and detailed finishing, they come with a 5 year warranty. So, if you are curious about the actual price of the shutters? They start at R2 800 per M² ex Vat. The lead time on the standard white options are 15 to 20 working days (Mine took less than 2 weeks!).

Closing mechanisms of the shutters

I had some questions on social media about the shutting mechanisms on the shutters. I thought that a picture is worth a thousand words. So here they go. The shutters ‘clip’ into a hook at the top of the shutters and then they also have a twist and turn mechanism to lock the shutters to each other. It is important to note that they ARE NOT security shutters. But if you are interested in the aluminum security shutters that you can use instead of burglar bars (they are wayyyy prettier) then the lovilees over at Mediterranean Lifestyle can also assist.
