Custom-made ice cream for your special day

Every now and then I get the opportunity to stumble across a totally unique new product and/or concept. Whiskaway Ice Cream is one such a product. Custom-made Ice-cream with a unique flavour designed just for you for a wedding or any other occasion… Nom, nom, nom! It was even nominated for the 2013 DStv EatOut Fresh Produce award for Best New Product.

Imagine a little ice-cream cart pulling up, spoiling your guests to some delectable ice-creams whilst the couple takes photos or using the ice-creams as part of the dessert table. We spent a few minutes with Karien at the Hazel Food Market, creative mastermind behind the Whiskaway Ice Cream brand. We were spoilt with the chocolate flavour ice-cream and wow, was it yummy!


Tell us more about yourself and how you started Whiskaway
I used to work as a {self-taught} pastry chef at a big hotel in Sandhurst. Whilst in the UK I fell in love with Haagen-Dazs Ice-cream and dreamt of opening my own little ice-cream business. I felt that there was a definite market for home-made ice-cream locally that was both affordable and tasty. Combining my experience, creativity and skills Whiskaway was born!

Tell us more about the Ice-cream you make
Whiskaway ice-cream and sorbets are made from all natural products, no artificial colouring or flavouring is added. I like making ‘different’ combinations… something that is not available from major food retailers. Even though this is my niche, I still find that there is a great demand for the traditional plain vanilla and strawberry flavours.

I must admit that it is very trying to keep myself from over-indulging… I actually wear one of those masks to prevent me from it…

How does ordering custom flavours for weddings or events work?

  • It is one of the most enjoyable things for me when I get an email with a custom ice-cream flavour request. I have had requests for Spiced Chai {for a lady who wanted it to fit in with her menu for entertaining at home}, Guinness flavour {A birthday present for a Guinness lover} and Berries & Bubbly {for a local lifestyle magazine}. This gets my creative juices flowing! A couple can contact me with their ideas and we will work towards a flavour that represents them best.
  • I can cater for any number of cones or tubs requested and have done so for previous functions in the region of 100-150 people.
  • It is always advisable to check whether the venue that you will be using would agree to make use of outside catering. We have rarely had issues with this as the product we make is so unique and specific in nature.
  • I also have a special Ice-cream cart that is available for hire for the Ice-creams on the day. {see the image below}

Where can people get to taste your creations?
I have a stall at the Hazel Food Market in Menlo Park, Pretoria every Saturday or lovilees can order from me directly by emailing or give me a call on 082 820 9902.

Which flavours are currently your best sellers?
My most popular flavours are definitely Cashew & Caramel; Honeycomb Cheesecake; Triple Chocolate and the Brownies & Cream. In the sorbets Strawberry & Basil as well as Mango & Chilli are the favourites.
