Introducing Bed Bath Body, local bath and body products

Bed Bath Body is a proudly South African label that produces and sells bath and body products. Their range includes essential oils, beautifully packaged soap, lotion, room fragrance, diffuser and scented candles. There are also some functional décor for the home including beautiful exquisitely carved wooden items, scented gifts and essential oil burners.

Lisa comes from a quiet, dusty little quaint town in KZN. With both her parents, Jan + Elize being entrepreneurs and she always had an entreprenuerial background + always looked at the bigger picture along with the risks. She decided to leave the small town + get a space of her own in the big + bustling Johannesburg where she studied wedding planning.

Bed Bath Body bath and body products

At the end of last year I received a gift with some Bed Bath Body products inside and I have been hooked since! I am a fan of their really really pretty packaging as well as the body products inside and I was totally sureprised to find that the products are budget friendly as well. I recently visited one of their retail stores in 44 Stanley and went crazy, everything you pick up is perfect and really lovilee to smell.

The business is family run, guided and directed by Lisa Schoeman eldest daughter of three and I decided to pop her a mail to get the inside scoop.

Tell us more about Bed Bath Body and how your business started

Bed Bath Body at 44 Stanley Avenue was our first brick and mortar store and the start of an exciting journey. What was meant to be a five year plan turned out to happen in just a week. Well, four days to be exact.

After exhibiting at a market I decided that this was not the vision I had for the brand so decided to focus on selling the products online. That same afternoon I received an email from the Pop Up Shop Shop (no grammar error that’s what they are called), for a couple of spaces in Johannesburg. I booked a flight (as I was based in KZN) and the next day my mom and I went to visit the space. It was love at first site, all white teeny tiny space, with large window and the most incredible light filtering in.

We had a salad at the little deli around the corner, drove back to my flat and designed the Bed Bath Body range from scratch consulting Jan, my dad and Karsten my fiancé busily working in the factory in New Hanover, KwaZulu Natal, and 4 hours later it was done. We moved into 44 Stanley with a 3 month pop-up space the following Tuesday.

How and where are the products made?

We manufacture all the products in-house with heaps of love and care. We really proud ourselves in the products we produce. Bed Bath Body is all about local and is a business that strives for all local. Even our ceramics are made by our local in-house ceramist.

All about creating a mood that celebrates the small pleasures of life.

What ranges does Bed Bath Body sell?

We have seven core fragrances, we just released our Body Spa range a collection of subtle essential oil products and this month the #RANGE a white, modern range with three new fragrances. Bed Bath Body is a creative and fun outlet for us as a family we love coming up with new things and the stores give us the chance the just enjoy the process. So we have seven fragrances in the core Bed Bath Body range – simply because of the shelving we selected could fit seven. It’s nothing fancy just something that had to happen practically.

Then the brand new #RANGE is a simple, modern and elegant range. Featuring the new fragrances #FRESH, #FLORAL + #SPICE. A duo of new fragrances and hand-made ceramics, we are sure will have you leaving the store doing a happy dance. Quickly becoming some of the bestsellers at Bed Bath Body.

Can you share any advice for lovilees looking at starting their own businesses?

My advice as the #girlboss is to make sure you have a support system in place, without my parents and fiancé Bed Bath Body wouldn’t be the same. As an entrepreneur it’s really incredible and empowering to work for myself but starting out the days can be really long, you have to hustle so support is essential. Then bigger is not always better.

Start small or where you feel comfortable (okay you are taking a leap of faith starting out but comfortable enough), I started with the teeny tiny store and tried it out for 3 months before jumping into something full time, with leases. Read your leases and get all your costs (the rates, electricity, security and levies) so basically know the facts. Get your landlord to send you the utility bills from previous months so you can plan your finances on point and know what you can expect and what your goals should be for turnover. Bottomline believe in yourself and choose to be the flower – be positive! Bloom where you are planted!

Where can lovilees purchase your bath products?

We have just launched our on-line store where you get free shipping on all orders over R495 in RSA. But we also have three concept stores:

  • Johannesburg: Shop G1, 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark, Johannesburg, Gauteng, 2092
  • Free State: En-Style, 100 Bree Street, Parys, Freestate, 9585
  • KZN: The Quarry Centre, Shop 11, 57 Hilton Avenue, Hilton, 3245

Now, I can finally share my favourites… I personally like the BED BATH BODY range with the Fresh Fig fragrance scent. It is simply… delicious!
