Visit Splendid at the Karoo Lifestyle Centre

Madeleen from Abundance Designs recently took some images of a lovilee store called Splendid, situated at the Karoo Lifestyle Centre in Pretoria. The store is owned by three creatives – Alice Tindall, Dirk Vermaak and Andrea van Tonder, each having a special role to play in the shop and what it stocks. Alice Tindall, co-owner of the shop shared more of what the shop is all about.

The idea for our shop came with the preparation for a textile exhibition I initiated last year. Dirk and I used to have evenings where we come together to discuss our designs and do some drawings. Dirk brought Andrea, a friend along and she mentioned a lovely spot for a shop at Karoo Cafe, a restaurant with art environment in 141 Lynwood Road, Pretoria.

I said I would be keen to open a shop with her on condition that I can put my silkscreen table in the shop. Dirk and Andrea agreed and our printing deco shop was born in September 2012.

We stock exceptional gifts that you don’t find in every shop. In addition to textiles, we showcase products of various other South African artists for example, the semi precious necklaces of Ariana van Heerden, fine porcelain from Salt, ceramics and textiles from various other South African artists.

A unique feature of the shop is that you can come and see how textiles are printed in the shop. We also give silkscreen classes and help people to print their own textiles.

About Alice: I’m an born entrepreneur, before opening the shop I did a lot of rural development and marketed craft locally and internationally to clients in Sweden and the US. Locally I worked with various designers and just love the opportunity to develop products. Lately I’ve been encouraged to develop my own textile ranges. The first range was called ‘Ietsie Blou’ inspired by the poem, something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The textiles are developed in conjunction with various local artist, where I assist with the design process and silk printing techniques. The inspiration for each textile comes from the various artist nostalgic memories of the past, their expectations of the future – the parcel in the post- as well as inspiration from sentimental events. Therefore every textile in our shop represents something of the artist that created the design.

I’m also busy doing my own Alice Tindall range. Which will be launched in the shop soon.

About Andrea: Andrea is ‘n part time teacher, PRO and shop owner who loves trendy, edgy, beautiful things. Her focus is on stocking products designed by South African designers. She would like to one day also export stunning South African designs.

About Dirk:
Collector, designer and appreciator of pretty objects and elements. Loves showing how it can be used in the every day routines.
