How spoilt am I? Being 38 weeks pregnant and being spoilt with a box of Las Paletas (Spanish for ‘ice lollies’) artisan lollies to try out?! These lollies are hand-made and contain 100% natural ingredients and free from all flavourants, colourants, additives and powdered products. Las Paletas only make use of real fruit, dairy, nuts and chocolate in their manufacturing process. A treat that can be enjoyed by the whole family (or a pregnant mommy) – best of all guilt-free!
The company was founded in 2012 by husband and wife duo, Jason Sandell and Diana Chavarro who combined their passion for food to create the unique flavours of Las Paletas. They have come a long way from starting the company in their own kitchen to now having a thriving business.
Flavours / options available
The recipes are variations on traditional ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbets and fresh fruit juice. Las Paletas specializes in exotic, out of the ordinary flavours like guava & cheese, coconut lemonade (this one is crazy yum!), pineapple & chili and gooseberry cheesecake to name but a few. They have a calendar on their website detailing when which flavours are available here, as they obviously follow natures calendar.
My favourite flavours? Definitely the Strawberries & Cream and Strawberry sorbet (yup, I am a berry addict!) I can’t wait to try the roast banana and the peanut butter bomb still, but alas, I have to pace myself…
Catering for weddings and other special occasions
In addition to just manufacturing delicious artisan lollies, Las Paletas can also spoil your guests with a variety of catering options, available in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. There is a retro bike, cart or ice cream truck that can compliment the decor of your special event and serve yummy treats, the perfect summer detail to add!
Where can lovilees purchase Las Paletas lollies?
Las Paletas is available at various deli’s, Pick ‘n Pay, Spar, Melissa’s and Wellness Warehouse stores across Cape Town. There are also some eateries across South Africa where you can get your hands on these artisan lollies. See the full list here.
