I just LOVE it when I see weddings that are not only gorgeous, but made possible by lovilees that collaborate! Moi Decor has been part of the lovilee family for a few years now, and Nicci, Carla from Moi Decor’s sister recently tied the knot at the Cowshed Venue near Dullstroom. It was to a large extent a DIY wedding. The décor was done by Carla and Nicci. The stationary, hair and make-up Nicci, an illustrator by profession, did herself. Her mom made her dress and for the rest they called in other professionals. The wedding planning took just over a year, but this Glam Barn Wedding was sooo worth it!
“I had this dream of a barn wedding, my husband wanted a destination wedding and we found this gem of a place in the middle of nowhere. I really wanted to combine the farm style idea with ethereal whimsy while still having elegance and sparkle. So the idea was to add some opulence to the rustic style while still keeping it laid back.
We also used a small chalkboard sub-theme with dark charcoal just to give our wedding a bit of a contemporary feel and to provide something more masculine to give an edge to the glitter, soft flowers and candlelight. So our “look” was more of an idea than a strict theme and our colour palette was also broad. We used various shades of charcoal, off gold, white and then pops of antique gold and silver glitter to bring some sparkle in. I’d attribute that to my Portuguese roots and needing a little bit of bling.”
How did you meet?
We met in September 2011. I (Nicci) was having a “I want to try something new” phase and decided to give rock climbing a go. An old work colleague and friend of my sister was doing rock climbing with friends and so I went a long with them for the day (not really knowing what I was getting myself into.) I can be quite a girly girl and I like my make-up. That day I just had my hair tied up all rough in a bun, no make-up and was even a little sick. My husband climbed with these friends and that is how we met! It all blossomed from there, he thought he was getting this rock climbing sporty girl… which I find quite funny, because I am more of an arty girly girl. Trying something new can be a life-changing adventure!
Tell us more about the proposal?
Vaughn took me to this amazing game lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve for a romantic weekend. I was hoping he’d propose all weekend. Every time we went on these game drives just the two of us, I was thinking “is he going to ask me?” and he didn’t. By the Sunday I sms’d my sister saying “ah I don’t think he is going to ask me, but that’s okay”. That Sunday night he called me out to our porch area and there were all these little lanterns, bubbly and the gorgeous bush in the background… and he popped the question.
What stationary was included on the day?
There were so many. I did the planning and the stationary myself. I designed little magnets as the save-the-dates, made passport style invitations, badges that were name placeholders on top of the menus (which a lot of people wore and seemed to have loved).
I made little paddle fans for the programs and packs of tissues for “happy tears”. The passport books I bound with a glittery washi tape. The paddle fans I actually printed the programs and then used these long ice-cream sticks as the base of the paddle. The packets of tissues, I cut a cute little tag out and tied them with bakers twine.
Do you have any advice for other couples planning their wedding?
Sometimes a broad vision or colour palette gives you more room for creativity and is easier to execute. Give yourself enough time to get everything done. Enjoy the process and remember to relax. It’s so easy to get absorbed into the stress of planning and also who and who not to invite on the day. But in the end you can’t please everyone and that’s okay!
