Tasteful simplicity, a stunning dress, gorgeous do-it-yourself details: Only a few ways to describe the gorgeous Hathersage wedding of Christine and Wesley held in Somerset-West. We are excited to share these images captured by the greatly gifted Taryn Ward.
Tell us a little about how you met?
We initially met when I was in my mid-teens through mutual friends. A couple of years later we randomly bumped into each other at a local hang out and had our first official date the next evening. That was the beginning of our 6 relationship before Wesley proposed.
How did Wesley propose?
‘Wesley took me out on a day trip, 18 August 2012, toKirshtenbosch botanical gardens. While strolling through the gardens I was admiring the beautiful plantation. At a specific quiet, intimate spot I turned around to find Wesley on his one knee. It was perfect in every way.
How long did the wedding planning take?
‘The wedding planning took approximately 13 months. We specifically extended it as Wesley’s mother had to plan her trip from Canada.’
Were there any DIY details on the wedding? Please elaborate on the how-to’s?
Yes, mostly everything! To make the wedding as budget friendly as possible, we decided to do everything ourselves. It was fun, but very tiresome. I designed the invitations, the ceremony stationary and even the wedding dress. I had a couple of stamps made to pull through the theme, punched the confetti from old books and recycled glass jars for the ceremony. I had the table numbers and cake topper laser cut.
How did you decide on the theme and/or the colour palette?
Our theme was modern rustic with a neutral palette, as it is closest to our personal style. We consciously decided to keep it minimal and timeless as possible.
Any advice for engaged couples?
Keep perspective of what the event is really about: the declaration of your love and commitment in front of your family and friends. Don’t be disappointed if everything does not work out exactly as planned, your guests will never know! Your diary is your best friend. Try not to be influenced by the endless ideas and inspiration you find on your favourite blogs (you’ll be changing and altering until the last second!) Less is more. Plan upfront, stay focused, and try to enjoy every moment.
