Read my Kärcher FC5 hard floor cleaner review

So glad that you stopped by to read my Karcher FC5 hard floor cleaner review. This nifty new floor cleaner with its 2-in-1 wiping with suction function in the signature Kärcher yellow was sent to me to test out for a review. I had no idea what to expect of this floor cleaner but when I saw that you could use it on all kinds of wooden floors including parquet I was keen to take it for a ‘test drive’.

Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE our suspended wooden floors as well as the parquet in the other section of our home but I literally HATE the cleaning that comes with. It has been a struggle for me since day 1. In our previous home we had laminated flooring and it was a dream to clean and it kept looking great with minimal upkeep. A quick sweep and then just a clean with a damp cloth once a week was more than enough (ok, we also did not have kids yet). Our current floors have proved to be a little more challenging. We moved in with brand new sanded floors and they were a nice light color. At first we used wooden floor cleaning solution, but made the mistake to not vacuum beforehand. The floors soon became quite a few shades darker. Scrub, scrub, scrub…

I then tried my own solution using vinegar and water, purchased a vacuum cleaner and then afterwards used a damp cloth. Took like forever to get clean but still the edges of the floor, closest to the walls ended up being darker. Scrub, scrub, scrub… So when Karcher contacted me I was totally keen to try their new cleaner. I decided to just clean 1 room. At first sight the floors looked as clean as they normally do after but after I saw the tank with the dirty water in I almost fainted… My house was super dirty… When I actually wiped my hands over the floors they did feel different. I decided to do the rest of the house and afterwards you could visibly see the difference and the whole house actually smells cleaner.

What you will receive in the box of your Kärcher FC5

  • The actual Karcher cleaner that needs a teeny tiny assembly. The handle is attached to the actual machine part in a click fit motion, no additional tools required. (This is a once-off procedure)
  • The machine stand, used to keep it upright when not is use as well as to clean the rollers from time to time.
  • 30 ml of the Karcher floor cleaning solution
  • A VERY bulky user manual. – Do not let the thick instruction book put you off – it is filled with a whole lot of translations of the instructions, the actual English Instructions are easy to follow, short and to the point. If you lose these instructions you can find them online.

Product specifications of this floor cleaner

You can find detailed specifications on the Karcher floor cleaner here. But here with ones that I wanted to highlight:

  • The height of the machine is 1.2m and the width approximately 320mm making it just taller than the average 2 year old. The weight is 4.6kg, a lot lighter than a 2 year old.
  • The cable length is 7m in length which is longer than that of my normal vacuum cleaner – bonus!
  • The cleaner has 2 tanks, one for the clean water in the front and another that collects the dirty water at the back. Make sure that you clean both if either is full to keep your machine running as it should.

My review on the Karcher FC5 hard floor cleaner

Plus points

  • This Floor cleaner uses up to 85% less water than conventional mopping does. I was surprised at how many rooms I could do in one tank of 400ml water. I managed to do 3 decent sized bedrooms with a combined surface area of around 60m2.
  • Time = money. Because the Karcher FC5 mops and vacuums at the same time you almost halve the time you used to spend cleaning.
  • The floors are dry in next to no time as it does not leave a lot of water behind literally only a minute residue.
  • It really does vacuum and clean as you would expect it to. And the proof is in the tank of residual water that you get to empty afterwards. (Don’t judge me, but see the awful pic below!)
  • I love that this machine is upright and easy on your back.
  • The rollers are easily removable and can be even be washed in a standard washing machine.

Plus minus points

  • This floor cleaner cannot stand on its own. So if you take a break in between cleaning you either need to rest it against something or place it back into its footrest.
  • It is great for everyday use and cleaning, but hard core / ‘old’ dirt needs some elbow grease still or takes a little more effort with the cleaner.
  • If you have carpets in sections of your home you cannot make use of this cleaner there. You still need a vacuum cleaner, but for all other hard surfaces this cleaner will work.

Do I think that this is a good buy?
I will definitely be using my new cleaner frequently going forward. I can really see a difference between how my house looks and feels before and after use. So YES!
